"So Am I" by Ava Max - Single Review

With breakout single "Sweet but Psycho" topping the charts in 17 countries, recently reaching a peak of #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 here in the states, critics have been quick to label American singer-songwriter Ava Max the next big thing in pop music. She's hearing the praise, accepting the responsibility, and responding accordingly.

The 25-year-old now begins promotion for follow-up effort "So Am I", a bouncy, empowering pop anthem where the artist stresses to the outcasts of the world to find strength in their peculiarities and differences. Comforting listeners by insisting she's as much of a misfit and odd as everyone else, Max sings that no one should ever strive to cram themselves into a box or diminish their own creative and unique spark.

Produced once again by Cirkut (Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj, Kim Petras), the new track encourages each of us to embrace what we bring to the table, flaws and all. The artist supports the destruction of societal norms in order to continue walking boldly forward. "Do you ever feel like a misfit?, everything inside you is dark and twisted, oh, but it's okay to be different, 'cause baby, so am I," she sings on the very radio-friendly chorus.

As other media outlets have highlighted, "So Am I" sounds as if designed to help young listeners navigate the often-complicated adolescent years. The bullied, the misunderstood, the sinners all have a rightful place in Max's inner circle as she sings of understanding exactly what they must be going through as a society of hatred and intolerance appears more prevalent in today's culture. Instead of fading into the background, the artist underscores the importance of finding beauty in awkwardness.

And even though "So Am I" bares some striking production structure and progression similarities to its predecessor -- fellow bloggers have already labeled the effort "Sweet but Psycho 2.0" -- the new bop of inspiration shifts focus on songwriting from a jilted romantic perspective to something a bit more universal and resonating. The message sounds heartfelt, urgent and important, another "Born This Way"-like hit in the making.

Remember, you don't have to fit into the format.
